Reading Newsarama this weekend I saw some sad news: the current LSH
series will end with issue 50. Concidering that the story Shooter had
going was supposed to end in issue 54, this means he has to throw out
most of what he wanted to do so he can bring the entire series to a
close in only 2 more issues instead of just the current storyline to
be done in 6.

The Newsarama story can be found here:

I guess this lends further credence to the idea of a Legion series
based on Geoff Johns' "original" version...even if he may not be the
one to ultimately write it.

Personally, I don't mind the current book ending at all...I love the
art but I don't really like Shooter's run this time at all...I kind of
liked Waid's run (though I would have prefered he not reboot yet
again) but this series really went off the rails when he left...maybe
even a little before he left.

...The scuttlebutt is that they're going to let the Legion rest for at
least a year, and then do some sort of relaunch. Legion fans need to
unite at conventions and demand that the book be revived immediately,
and restored to its former glory. And the first time Dan Dildohead
quips off in the negative, everyone starts throwing chairs at him. A
few hits and he'll get the point finally.

With the conflicting versions of the Legion that have been popping up
all over the place lately, I'm not so sure a little break is a bad
idea...give us some time to get the bad taste out of our mouths, so to
speak...as for restoring the Legion to it's former glory, I suspect
there would be a varied opinion as to what that would mean
exactly...personally, I want the Abnett/Lanning Legion back...I know
it's not going to happen in any significant way but it's still what
I'd like to see.

At any rate, I think we can all agree on one thing...NO MORE
REBOOTS...we've got 3 versions already...pick one and stick with it.

The LSH is gonna be showing up in Smallville this season. They probably
want to see what happens with that before making any decisions in the
longer term.

Whereas I was no fan of the Waid concept. It was actually moving back
=on= the tracks for me starting with the 1001YL issues; handwaving away
as having been resolved off-panel most of the generational and neo-
Puritanical crap removed my biggest impediments wrt enjoying the title.

Shooter's return has been only slightly disappointing, as I was really
expecting wild space-opera and rollicking wall-to-wall action. Instead,
we've seen as quiet and subtle a book as DC has put out in recent memory,
a rich (if massively decompressed) feast of Legion reconstructionsism
where a facility with the mundane is enough to make you a valued
Legionnaire (if you don't love Management Lad, you don't love life!)
while unchecked feelings of loss and loneliness and the rejection of
offers of friendship suffice to make a hero a villain. (Although Jeckie's
current career spiral does have more than a few echoes of Shooter's Hank
Pym stuff of a quarter-century ago. Still, she's not slapped Karate Kid
yet.)

It helps that his Saturn Girl brings back fond memories of my favorite
ex, too. :)

I do like "Management Lad"...and I think what he's doing with Jeckie
has potential but it all depends on where he takes it...but I really
don't care for the rest of Shooter's storylines...having the
mysterious threat from beyond and the UP turn on the Legion just seems
like he's repeating what Waid had already done...and the tone and
characterizations (in many cases) have changed so much from Waid's run
that it almost feels like Shooter rebooted the book again...it doesn't
feel like the same Legion...and I know a lot of people out there might
see that as an improvement, but the change just doesn't seem earned to
me, if that makes any sense...it's too abrupt and it makes it hard for
me to really care for the characters like I used to.

IMO, the Waid/Kitson Legion was never *on* the rails until Shooter
started writing it. By that time, though, its fate was clear as Lo3W
was announced either shortly before or shortly after Shooter joining.

LORELAI: I am so done with plans. I am never, ever making one again.
It never works. I spend the day obsessing over why it didn't work
and what I could've done differently. I'm analyzing all my shortcomings
when all I really need to be doing is vowing to never, ever make a plan
ever again, which I'm doing now, having once again been the innocent
victim of my own stupid plans. God, I need some coffee.

I think Shooter's run could've worked, if it weren't such a jarring
difference from the Waid and Bedard tone. For me it was like a train
switching tracks like Tron light cycles switch directions ... they just
didn't connect in any real sense.

And I've had enough of the "troubles with the government" and "Garth's
an idiot" shtick.

...Shooter's mistake was not dumping everything that Waid forced on
the Legion and switching back to something more in line with what
everyone expects from the Legion. That, and this attempt to turn
Jeckie into Wanda Maximoff.

...The "troubles with the government" goes all the way back to
Shooter's *first* run, with Universo replacing Boltax long enough to
outlaw the Legion. Since then, they've had run-ins, but it never got
as ridiculous as the bullshit concepts Waid barfed on the book. The
only reason to buy the book once Waid took over was for the Barry
Kitson art. Ironically, it was the opposite of the early DnA run,
where you bought the book for the story but you fucking well did *NOT*
buy it for Ol' Scratchy's immature art "style".
