LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES: ENEMY MANIFEST trade paperback.
The trade paperback collection of the final six issues of LSH V5, the final
Jim Shooter published story. Love it, hate it, or haven't read it, all of
Shooter's third stint on the Legion has been collected in affordable format.
TINY TITANS 28
You got me with the cover: "Presenting the Super-Pets" !!! If that wasn't
enough to get you to pick it up, on the cover is the kids (cartoonish)
version of PROTY! It has a head like Chameleon Boy's on top of its'
normally blob body, but that's okay. Proty is brought back to today by
Brainiac 5. A couple of Legion puns ensue.
Finally, LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES (V6) 1.
Surely you didnt think I was going to let this one go by without comment,
did you?
Standard misleading cover of someone wearing both a Flight Ring and a Green
Lantern Ring. The hand belongs to Earth-Man, the villain in the Superman
and the Legion story that brought this version of the Legion back, and he IS
offered both rings. Huh?
Quick synopsis of where things appear to stand: the political situation on
Earth is still shaky. The xenophobes still have a lot of power. The Time
Institute has moved to Titan. The xenophobes want the Legion off Earth as
well, until a political compromise is reached. The Legion will be allowed
to remain on Earth and Earth will stay in the United Planets IF Earth-Man is
made a Legionnaire.
That's where things start.
Saturn Girl goes to Titans to review her memories. While she is there, the
Time Institute tries to view the Origin of the Universe (see Krona, Green
Lantern (II) 43, and Crisis on Infinite Earths). Some people never learn.
They get to an image of the giant hand that is part of DC's universe origin,
and everything explodes.
This causes ripples throughout space. On OA, some sort of failsafe is
triggered before Last Green Lantern, Ion Sodam Yat's eyes. It takes one of
the many spent rings and disappears, reappearing later to offer the ring to
Earth-Man. Titans starts to fall apart. Saturn Girl goes to find her boys
who are in a school on Titan. Just as she finds them, they disappear in what
she determines to be a temporal wave. Taking the last surviving time bubble
from the remains of the Time Institute, she takes off just in time to watch
Titan explode. Talk about starting the series with a bang!
Of more interest to me in this issue is Paul Levitz's "Welcome to the
Future" text page. In it Paul reveals the continuity of this Legion is
essentially that of the pre-boot from Adventure 247 up through the Magic
Wars (LSH V3 63). He gives himself an out for the so far slight differences
(Karate Kid's death) as "Chronicler's error" with which we can handwave away
technology glitches and other continuity problems. He also confirms (as I
suspected) that the stories that will be told in Adventure will essentially
be a "Legion 101", filling in gaps in the back story and help new readers
understand Legion history and relationships. The current team's story will
be told in this title.
Until next time,
