Came accross this the other day. Back in 1966 a really bad B-Grade
movie called "Manos, the Hands of Fate". The poster came with the
blurb "A cult of wierd horrible people who gather beautiful women only
to deface them with a burning hand" (see link for poster):

I was wondering if Shooter had seen this in creating Mano see link:

or was it just a really strange coincidence. The film was released in
November 1966, Mano's first appearence was in January 1967.

More likely he was influenced by his high school Spanish classes:
"Mano" is Spanish for "hand". (Derived from Latin "manus", whence
that "Manos".) Shooter used Spanish elsewhere, too.

Reading further in Wikipedia, that film doesn't seem likely to be a
huge hit - except as apparently unintended comedy. And I'm not clear
where the hand thing actually fits in. *shrug*

Are there precedents for a character with disintegrating touch, now?
The Horta in Star Trek presumably was later?

The villain-priest-guy wore a robe with a huge hand on it.
