SPOILER SPACE AHOY-ISH

Okay. I kinda have no basis in fact for this yet, but since we've had
these discussions of what Superman means when he says that he wants to
"redeem" Superboy-Prime, I had been wondering. Then I read
Newsarama's interview with Geoff Johns regarding Lo3W at:

http://www.newsarama.com/comics/080825-SpoilerSportL3W.html

And Johns goes on to say that the TIme Trapper is going to be a part
of the storyline. (Well, you've gotta have your heroes' equivalent of
Dr. Doom in a story like this).

And I started thinking . . . Time Trapper . . . Time-bending powers.
Superboy-Prime . . . time-smashing powers.

Yes, I'm thinking:

Time Trapper = older Superboy-Prime, powers diminished, Still
unredeemed. Still really, really cranky.

It's not that hard to redeem Superboy-Prime. Just show him back on Earth
Prime taking a visit to DC Comics. He watches someone write a story where
people are killed off. And he muses that he did the same thing, but he was
actually there....

Becuase in the old DCU, DC comics writers on Earth-Prime weren't considered
murderers for writing stories that caused tragedies to happen on Earth-1.
Superboy Prime is just another Earth-Prime writer with a very unusual method
of writing.

"In a superhero story, Superman jumps off buildings and flies. In a realistic
story, Superman doesn't jump off buildings and can't fly. Deconstruction is
writing a story where Superman can't fly but he still jumps off of buildings."

Surely DC writers on Earth-Prime weren't *causing* things to happen, they
were compelled by strange vibrations to write down what was happening
anyway? I don't believe this line of defence would have worked for Cary
Bates during his brief career as an Earth-2 arch-criminal (although "I
was controlled by the Wizard" did).

I'm hoping, REALLY hoping, that this turns out to be another false
reveal and the last page of the series has the proper Time Trapper in
contemplation, saying something like "oh well, back to the drawing
board". 'Cause "Prime Trapper" (can't remember who coined that) just
doesn't work for me.

["Prime Trapper" (can't remember who coined that)]

The comic itself. On the final page, it appeared at the bottom, in the
"next issue" box. "Next: Prime Trapper!" Or something like that.

It sure beats Rokk becoming the Trapper.

The only thing is, I'm not too sure Superboy-Prime has "time-smashing
powers." Rather, he was able to impact the crystals in "paradise," which
I've always seen as the last manifestation of HyperTime. So it was the
crystals, not Superboy, that were responsible for the infamous "reality
punches." Superboy was the only one who had the power to do it, and the
ability to be manipulated into doing it.

I read it as: Prime's fixation on "how things are supposed to be" is
based on his reading of DC comics on Earth-Prime. He is misguided
(because that's not the way the DC Universe works anymore) and
irrationally angry. i.e. he's a rabid fanboy.

No. Earth-Two Superman did it too. At the beginning of Infinite
Crisis it was Superman-Prime's doing, although it later turned out
that Earth-Prime Superboy had been doing it longer and secretly.

But, as you say, the parallels with Earth-Two Superman banging on the
wall to "Paradise" (which he saw as a prison) are uncanny.
