...So, any of the old, original rec.arts.comics posters still lurking
about out there? I did a quick header scan of the last 1000 posts on
here, and actually didn't recognize any account names. So I wonder if
any of the old regulars are stil out there.

I go all the way back to the birth of the various newsgroups out of
rec.arts.comics or whatever, but never really posted a whole lot.
(I post even less now, though.)

...Guess I should have been more specific. My active years in rac*
were from mid-1986 to ~1995 or thereabouts. Since 1996, tho, I've
spent most of my Usenetting over on sci.space.history, where I found a
more professional level of signal-to-noise. Like the rest of Usenet,
tho, it's gotten cluttered by trolls and an element that the .comics
groups tend to not have to deal with that much - the psychotics. We
actually had a father-son team of whack jobs contaminating threads for
several years: the father would push some bullshit theory on why
Challenger's ET exploded, everyone would call "bullshit" *AND* provide
incontrovertible proof, and the hire-a-pig he had as a son would file
complaints with the posters' local police departments, claiming they
were threatening to kill them both by telling everyone to put them in
their "killfile".

...So, to make a long story short, you're still a "kid" compared to me
:-) :-) :-)

I've been posting since around 1999 or 2000, but haven't had much to
say in the last year or more. Too much happened. My dad died in May
2007 after being diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer 12 months previous.
I got involved in a multimedia prep course, to hopefully get accepted
into college, and hope to go to college in October. I'm first on a
waiting list, and have to wair to see whether I get accepted or not.
And if not, then I dunno.

I post when I have a question, but I don't often have many questions
related to comic books now, unfortunately. Just do not have the time
to read them or I don't have the money to buy them, ort TPB's.

Define "old": My earliest posts (that Google can find) were from 1995.

...Sorry. As I said in another post, I got started on rec.arts.comics
back in the middle of 1986. 22 years ago, which boggles the mind when
you realize that in today's GUI computer world, what's nothing more
than a ultramassive, somewhat out-of-control lumbering elephant of a
BBS is still up and running. Granted, 92.54% of the traffic is porn
and other binaries, but at least some of the groups have discussions
on them :-/

I started posting to r.a.c. while at DEC at 1991, a contemporary of
the legendary Jerry Boyajian (jayembee). These days my sole superhero
comics input is reading the dc. and marvel.universe newsgroups to keep
an eye on funny continuity issues. I refuse to buy another DC comic as
long as Sue Dibny is still dead.

Were you aware that Ralph and Sue are once again an investigative team?
Sort of a cross between Nick and Nora Charles and George and Marion Kerby.

jayembee seems to be hanging out on sf.written and r.a.t. mostly nowadays.

I remember The Mad Armenian (jayembee) and his reviews. I'd look
forward to his comics reviews almost as much as the comics themselves.
There was always so much I missed in Watchmen on first reading that his
comments made me look back to that month's issue. He reviewed stuff
that I didn't even look at. I think that's how I discovered Zot!.

There were other reviewers in the mid-80s that I would look forward to
reading on net.comics/rec.arts.comics*, but I can't remember them.

Probably Jeff "Moriarty" Meyer, who with Jerry was definitely the head of
the class with respect to reviews then.

Probably Jeff "Moriarty" Meyer, who with Jerry was definitely the head of
the class with respect to reviews then.
...This is probably one of maybe three times I've ever agreed with Old
Ego Trip, but the Two J's set the standard for reviewing of comic
books for usenet. This in turn carried over onto the Web, and to this
day you'll see reviews that clearly channel the spirit and tone that
Jerry and Jeff were famous for, especially where the reviewers are
those who got started on usenet and "grew up" reading their reviews.

...There *are* exceptions, tho. I've noted that female reviewers tend
to post reviews that sound either like Johanna Draper or the gal who
called herself "Sha-Bang". While enjoyable, there were times when a
review of a particular book triggered the need to go into "Soapbox
Mode" and thus off on a political tangent that had one trying to
figure out how to remix the old metaphor about not mixing religion
and/or politics with partying at a strip club to apply.

...Another exception I've begun to see more of lately occurs in the
blossoming area of reviewers using YouTube or other video clip
services as the method of presenting their opinions. Sadly, the rule
rather than the exception has been for two or three obvious geeks
sitting in front of the camera, wearing black t-shirts, and spending
more time trying to act witty and/or ubersnobbish than actually
reviewing the comic(s) in question with a rational approach towards
their merits and/or failings. On the other hand, it can be argued that
these particular reviews have their own inspiration in usenet; the
snobbishness that many of the indy book "clique" posters on rac*
excreted in the late 80's.

...Still, Jerry and Jeff set the standards for excellence in
reviewing, both in professionalism and in keeping the reader
entertained. And they never let their egos ruin the show, unless it
was for the sake of a good laugh.

Wow did i just get taken back through memory lane. Did a search on
Google groups under the old e-mail i had under my parents' internet
account. Found posts going back to 1995, which probably is around
when i started posting.

Just spent a good hour reading through some of them. I used to write
pretty poorly ;).

Interesting note - Paul O'Brien and Tom Galloway both replied to some
of my posts from way back then...so *they've* been around since at
least then as well.

Tyg did things to me "behind the scenes" too, and I pulled some things on
him that made what you did seem like the idle follies of youth. (One time
I convinced him I had been on Jeopardy.) My point is this. Tyg is not
around here from appearance. Most people reading this do not know or care
who he is. So just shut up about it and get on with your life. Geez,
you'd think it was the Kennedy assasination or something.

still drop by to read occasionally. until recently, i hadn't bought a
comic in almost 2 years, so i didn't have much to contribute to the
current discussions. i've started buying the trades now, though.
...In order:

1) Nothing wrong with lurking. I've been doing that on a couple of rec
groups that I have an interest in, but actively don't participate in
the hobby these days for any combination of several reasons: time,
distance, cash resources, and now missing one leg. Still allows me to
keep up with the latest goings-on, tho.

2) Personally, I predict that within the next two decades - yeah,
it'll take that long - regular monthly comics will be replaced with
online versions, which will be regularly compiled into trades and
omnibi(*). The reason it will take 20 years is that either the comics
or the monitors must finally shift from a portrait to a landscape
format, and from a cost perspective it'll probably have to be the
comics. With every monitor design shifting from the 4:3 "VGA" or TV
standard format to 16:9 HD or "Widescreen" format, odds are really,
*really* slim - no pun intended - that the standards will pivot by
90deg anytime soon. If there was any chance, Radius would have owned
the monitor market years ago.

(*) Omnis or Omnibis? I've heard both, but the argument against the
former is that some could be confused by the fact that there used to
be a magazine called "Omni". Those not familiar with it should know
that it was a science magazine put out by Bob Guccione, publisher of
"Penthouse". That magazine held a fond spot in my heart, because I
used it to mess with the minds of my teachers in high school and in my
freshman year at Texas U - it had the same size and shape as an issue
of "Penthouse", so if I took off the cover or held it just right, from
three or four rows back it looked as if I were looking at the
centerfold of some chick with great airbrushed fake tits and trying to
hide the fact. I had one old bat that *nobody* could stand send
several students to the dean for reading "Omni" in class, and actually
got reprimanded for it. Needless to say she was nudged into retirement
at the end of the year :-)

If only someone had done that to Guccioni's daughter before she took
over the magazine and ran it into the toilet. Damn [unstatable
expletive]..:-( :-(

2) Personally, I predict that within the next two decades - yeah,
it'll take that long - regular monthly comics will be replaced with
online versions, which will be regularly compiled into trades and
omnibi(*).
(*) Omnis or Omnibis? I've heard both, but the argument against the
former is that some could be confused by the fact that there used
to be a magazine called "Omni".
The plural for omnibus could never be omnis or omnibis except as a
joke or a colloquial abbreviation. Omnibus is the long form of the
word we still use for a type of public transportation, the bus. And
it shares the same plural form as buses. You can argue
those two versions you give, but they'd be wrong. It reminds me of
what Fowler said about a kind of cephalopod: "the only acceptable
plural in English is octopuses."

Unless we're inventing new comics jargon here?

...Probably why your name didn't ring a bell. Not holding it against
you, tho :-)

...On a side note, when I resubscribed to this group and .dcu, I did a
full header download from Giganews. There were posts on .dcu going
back to 2003, with the oldest being a review post by Johanna
Draper...who I wasn't aware had a new last name!

Time funs when you're having flies, natch.

Well, the B&W obviously only has the black and white material.
The first ten issues, which were in colour, are not included.

ObComics: I also was set PRINCE OF STORIES (Hank Wagner,
Christopher Golden, and Stephen R. Bissette), a massive book about
Neil Gaiman and his work.

I correct only to be polite: I have the ARC in hand and
the real-worlders who were there are Woody, Jenny and Butch.
When Max finds out, he says that he had assumed Jenny's world was
an imperfect copy of Zot's but that it may be the other way round.

Woodie notices that some of Zot's world makes no sense: the
song "Yankee Lady" exists in both worlds but it's about a guy who
moves to Canada to avoid being sent to Vietnam and Zot's world
never had a Vietnam War.

It somewhat worries me that of the people who've responded so far,
I've been here the longest. :-) (With the possible exception of OM
himself, who may predate me and was certainly more prolific back in
the day.) 1987 or so-- post Great Renaming (net.comics ->

hierarchy.

None of my posts from the earliest years seem to have survived into
the archives, though an early post I collaborated on with Paul Estin
(my college roommate, who maintained the r.a.c.* FAQ for a while) is
still floating around out there (e.g., <http://home.intranet.org/

...Quite a few of my old posts from about 1988 on up are still out
there. The real surprise was the big feud over on alt.cosuard managed
to get archived, a feud involving taxes on BBSing that I'd actually
forgotten about after damn near 15 years! I figure Tyg and Chuqi have
the old "Tyg-OM Feud" posts archived somewhere, which would really be
a hoot to read after all these years.

Do they still do the Squiddies around here, or did that become

That extincted a while back, sadly. I'm still in touch with tyg
elsewhere, though.
...I'm sorry for both. In the case of the former, what happened?
Nobody wanted to deal with the vote tabulation hassles when whoever
was running the awards quit? Then again, I can see where they might
have been coming from. My work on the Columbia Loss FAQ was so
demanding that once we got it into a finished format, I had to
completely drop it before it pushed me to a breakdown of some sort.
That accident took more out of me than I realized at the time, but
then again even with hindsight being 20/20 I wouldn't have shied away
from the task. It needed to be done, and so I did it.

...In the case of the latter, last I heard anything about Old Ego
Trip, he was a gofer at Google or something like that. On a related
note, Chuqi has a blog - I found that out when one of my OMBloggers
sent me a link to a post he'd made a year or so back about the Tyg-OM
feud. These days I just laugh it off, as I've got other things more
important to worry about. Like getting funding for a fake leg, then
soliciting some of my OMBloggers to design LED circuits to make the
damn thing look like it's got a warp drive powering it. Which in turn
has all the doctors and physical therapists going apeshit, as they've
never had an amputee literally accept and embrace the situation
without being one of those psychos who *want* their limbs amputated.

But that's me. Do the unexpected and watch everyone get conbefuddeled
:-)

What worries me is that they might *not*! I used to be able to
depend on the fact that no matter how long I'd been around, I could
count on tyg to reminisce about the days when the Usenet map ran:

duke<->UNC

...When Tyg would bring up stuff like that, it was more part of his
ego tripping - the "I've been here longer than you, peons!" schtick
that used to rub a lot of people the wrong way. But in this case,Tyg
was more whining than reminiscing. I remember one of his tirades when
Portal first came into being, claiming it was going to be the "end of
usenet" because it was no longer exclusive to academia.

The way it was set up was one-way, but that was because usenet access

March I'd gotten a CompCenter job, and an account came with it. That's

I know I've been posting since 92 or 93 but googlegroups ain't showing it.
...I'm finding that a *LOT* these days. Posts that were there 2-3
years ago from 10-11 years back are now missing, and Google has yet to
explain this. Of major note were some space history posts by Henry
Spencer, myself, Dwayne Allen Day, John Beaderstadt, and a few others
that I was looking up for previous reference, and they simply aren't
there. My own personal archives prior to 2000 got nuked in a hard
drive crash, and the backups of another, older version of Agent
somehow got corrupted. So AFAIK, they're history, which sucks because
I'd love to find a copy of my infamous Gemini 7 "Who Farted?" gag post
that some n00b actually believed had been purged from the official
transcripts!

Considering the loss of posts at Google Groups, maybe Tyg *does* work
for them after all ...:-P :-P

Where's Brucha, Celeste, Kate (both of them) the Aardvark? So many names missing.
And so many from the BoSPMwa! days. :( http://dolphins-cove.com/harbour/bospmwaa.htm
...Except for "Aardvark", none of those names _or_the group ring a
bell with me, alas. ISTR someone going by "Aardvark" back in the old
days, but I can't for the like of me remember anything specific.

...The sad thing is that this evening, just for gits and shiggles, I
went around and did header loads for about four dozen newsgroups I
once frequented. Except for rec.models.scale, the last time any of
them appeared to be anywhere near active was 2003. After that, there's
a seriously noted dropoff of traffic. Now, to be honest, I'm not sure
if that's due to Giganews having some sporadic issues with post
retention on non-binary groups or what, and I really haven't tried to
do a post volume comparison between Giganews and Google Groups to see
what's missing, but the dropoff was still very noticeable just from a
quick header scan.

So who knows? Maybe usenet *is* finally dying after all. And they said
not even a nuclear war could kill it...

All depends. Lotsa groups got spam-botted or troll-bombed away from
Usenet and onto message boards in the early 2000s, while others got
through just fine. Less a problem with the system than a problem with the
users -- or, anyway, at least the ease of access with which the stupid
could get in/on/whatever.

Since AOL and MSN TV (*) stopped affording direct access to Usenet,
though, the afflicted NGs seem to have been slowly making a comeback,
aside from those that were flat-out ghost-towned back in the day.

(*) OK, it's actually the MSN TV =2= users w/o direct Usenet access, but
it's a start.

...So, any of the old, original rec.arts.comics posters still lurking
about out there? I did a quick header scan of the last 1000 posts on
here, and actually didn't recognize any account names. So I wonder if
any of the old regulars are stil out there.
I was a regular poster from 1991-96 but now I lurk around and make an
occasional post.
...Jeez, from the few responses I've seen so far, that makes me the
oldest rac'er left, with Dave coming in second. Hell, I figured Old
Ego Trip would pop up just to claim ownership rights by now :-P
I've been around since the old net.comics days. Google Groups shows at
least since July 1985.

I mainly read rec.arts.comics.strips now, but dip in occasionally in the
r.a.c.marvel.universe (which is why I didn't see this until now).

I'm not active in the rac.* hierarchy anymore, but Google has
my first posting in Feb 1992. That is before racm existed.

In another group, a similar thread has found 4 people (including
myself) who have been posting since at least 1982.

Yeah, this is the thread that inspired Nicoll.
